Planning for Reopening Schools

Dear Parents and Families,

I hope this correspondence finds you well in these difficult times.  Each day I think of you and the challenges that you face.  I want you to know I appreciate you and I’m very grateful for your continued perseverance and patience.  You are critical to our current efforts to do the very best for our students during these unprecedented times.

The re-opening of our schools is a very complex matter which continues to involve the school board, the Mason County Health Department, our union leaders, the superintendent’s cabinet, school staff, school administration and the community through our seven sub-committees which involved over 100 people who spent countless hours contemplating, designing, and planning on when we will re-open our schools safely.

Based on the work of many, we have a plan and we are prepared to re-open our schools, but our plan must be fluid as it should be under there constantly changing and challenging circumstances.

Our decision to re-open schools will be based on the following:

Protecting the health and safety of students and staff.

  • Mason County Health Department direction.
  • The number of cases per 100,000 as determined by the Mason County Health Department.
  • The impact of the fall and winter flu season.
  • Impact from the holidays.
  • Any new direction from the Governor and/or other political entities.
  • The ultimate direction from the school board with input from the superintendent.

After numerous meetings with teachers, union leaders, building administrators, cabinet, sub-committees, the school board and the status of COIVD 19, I recommended to the school board at the November 10, 2020 school board meeting that we establish a fluid date of Monday, January 25, 2021 as the date to re-open our schools in a hybrid model beginning with pre-school, kindergarten and first grade.  Teachers would be asked to report for planning purposes anytime between Monday, January 11, 2021 and Monday, January 18, 2021.  This planning time would be flexible depending on the needs of staff and the school involved.

This is where we stand as of Monday, December 7, 2020.  We together will continue to monitor the situation carefully which may involve additional, fewer, or no students at all returning to school on January 25, 2021.

Again, the date of Monday, January 25, 2021 stands to be adjusted in accordance with the COVID 19 pandemic data.  I will keep you posted of any major changes.
