What is Title I?

 

Title I, Part A of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) provides financial assistance to school districts to meet the educational needs of students at-risk of failing the state’s challenging performance standards in math, reading, and writing. Title I, Part A provides additional instructional services and activities which support students.

 

What will Title I offer my child?

 

The Title I program will provide your child with additional instructional assistance in math, reading, and/or language arts.

 

Additional instructional assistance can be:

 
  • Teachers and instructional aides
  • One-to-one or small group instruction
  • Teaching materials which supplement a student’s regular instruction
 

 

 

How is Title I funding determined?

 

Funding for this program is determined by poverty rate.  The district uses free and reduced lunch counts to determine which schools will receive funds and how much each school will receive.  In Shelton School District, Title I funds are used to support Bordeaux, Evergreen and Mt. View Elementary Schools as well as Olympic Middle School.  Districts have the choice of using a Targeted Assistance program or a Schoolwide program.  The elementary schools are Targeted Assistance schools and Olympic Middle School is a Title I Schoolwide school.

 
 

What does Title I pay for?

 

In Shelton School District, Title I supplements the regular classroom program at the elementary and middle school levels.  Funding is used for “proven" teaching methods and programs such as hiring specialized teachers and educational assistants, tutoring, supplementary materials, parent and family engagement involvement activities, and staff training.

  • Learn to read faster
  • Have higher grades and test scores
  • Are promoted and take more challenging classes
  • Adapt better to school and have better attendance
  • Have better social skills and behavior
  • Graduate!

 

Your School's Role

  • Each Title I school identifies the students who need additional education assistance based upon the required criteria. Students do NOT have to be from low-income families to receive Title I, Part A services.
  • Each Title I school sets goals for improving the skills of students at risk of not meeting state standards at their school.
  • Each Title I school develops programs for each individual student in order to support/supplement regular classroom instruction.
  • Each Title I school measures student progress to determine the success of the Title I, Part A program for each student.

 

Parent & Family's Role

Every district has a parent and family engagement policy and a building parent involvement plan that describes different ways that families can be involved in the Title I program.

  • Become familiar with the program services and activities.
  • Get Involved: Participate in district and school meetings.
  • Stay Connected: Keep ongoing communication with program staff about your student's academic progress.
  • Communicate academic goals: Monitor your student's progress reports and contact your school about any academic concerns or goals.
  • Give feedback: Share your ideas or recommendations to improve services for your student, family and the greater community
