Shelton's Remote Learning Technology Guide

Remote Learning Technology Guide

Remote Learning Technology Guide

As of April 22nd, we have checked out 2212 Chromebooks to our students to use for online learning during this time of school closures.  For most families, this is a totally new experience.  It is also a new experience for our teaching staff as well. When you run into issues this guide will hopefully help you out.  If not, we have a couple of ways to offer assistance for you described below.

Requesting a Chromebook

To request a Chromebook, fill out the online Google Form.  We will send you an email with pickup instructions.

Internet Connection

A Chromebook requires a WiFi access point with an internet connection.  We have a list of local Internet providers that you can contact if you do not currently have access.

Alternative Internet Option #1 - Parking Lot WiFi

If you do not have home internet access then we have a few other methods to gain internet WiFi access at other locations.
PUD #3 is working on establishing "Drive-By WiFi" where members of the community can drive up to fire stations, parks, community centers, and some schools around the county.  Their equipment has been ordered but will be a few weeks before it arrives and gets installed. The following link is to the PUD #3 web page showing the locations of
Future Deployment of Community Drive-By WiFi by PUD #3.

The Shelton School District has set up parking lots, geographically spaced around the district to be WiFi access areas like what PUD #3 is working on.  WiFi is available in the lime green areas shown below at SHS, Evergreen, and Bordeaux.

Alternative Internet Option #2 -Cell Phone Hot Spot

If you do not have internet access at your home, but you do have a cell phone that connects to the internet, then you can turn your cell phone into a WiFi hot spot for other devices such as a Chromebook.

Chromebook Issues
If you need assistance setting up, logging onto, or troubleshooting issues with Chromebooks we have a few guides that will help you out.

Google Classroom
Our main Shelton School District platform for distributing and collecting classwork is Google Classroom. Below are some guides that will assist students and families in the use of Google Classroom.

District Online Programs Via Clever Portal
Links to our online district programs are located on our Clever Portal.  This portal requires a district Google account to access.  On the portal you will find links to a number of programs that the Shelton School District uses. To access the Clever Portal students can go to https://clever.com/in/shelton.  The portal has links to various online programs. The links each student sees are specific to their building and grade level so not all your students will have the same links.  Clever takes care of the login username and password for a number of the programs that are available. The programs are grouped into sections that indicate how students log into them.

Complementary Educational Resources

If you would like additional online educational resources we have a list of vetted educational websites available on our Shelton School District Complementary Educational Resources web page.  The web page also contains a list of non-tech activities for your students.

Video Presentations

Teachers are also utilizing videos and videoconferencing to instruct students.  Some teachers are recording lessons and distributing them via Google Classroom.  Other teachers are using videoconferencing to reach out to students in a more interactive way.  We have both Zoom and Google Meets available for our classes to use.  Links to online videoconferences will not be posted publicly but will be sent out via email or Google Classroom so that unwanted guests can not attend the videoconferences.

Student Email
As part of Google Classroom all students have email.  However, they are not public email accounts.  The functionality of them varies by grade level as follows.

  • Primary grade level (K-4) - email is only for Google Classroom purposes.  Teachers and staff that need to contact students via email will do that through the parents email.
  • Intermediate & High School grade levels (5-12)- Teachers and staff can email students with information.  Incoming email is limited to email domains that are needed for curricular purposes from websites that student work with.  No general email from public email providers is accepted unless needed for a class.

Usernames and passwords for students

Usernames for students are their student ID numbers.  Passwords can be obtained from students teachers and they can reset them if needed.  If a student wants to change their password they can using a link at the top of the Clever Portal (directions above for accessing Clever).
