Shelton's 18-19 Construction Updates

18-19 Construction Updates

August 2019

Crews have been hard at work this summer wrapping up construction on Mountain View Elementary and Shelton High School.

Classrooms are complete and furnishings are starting to arrive at Mountain View Elementary. The gymnasium, offices, and kitchen will be completed in the next two weeks, and toward the end of August, staff will start moving in. Outside, the playgrounds are finished, and the exterior play shed weather cover is starting construction.

At Shelton High School, the new auxiliary gym, which will be called “Highclimber Gym”, is near completion with only a few minor items remaining. The new 3-story academic building is in the completion stages. Inside, admin offices and the 25 new classrooms are nearly finished. The new art studio, culinary arts kitchen, and science labs will be finished in the next few weeks. Outside, the parking lot and exterior walkways are steadily progressing.

Both schools are on track to welcome students for the first day of school, September 16th. Thank you, Shelton community, for your support!

Shelton High School's New 3-Story Academic Building and Parking Lot Under Construction

June 2019

Our construction crews have been hard at work and the bond projects are still on track for schools to be ready on the first day of school, September 16th! Shelton High School’s updated parking lot is well underway, and Mt. View Elementary is moving along smoothly. It is amazing the amount of work accomplished already, and so exciting to watch the progress!

Also great news...originally advertised, the construction bond was at $3.56 per 1000. The collection rate for 2019 is now $2.87 per 1000. That is $ .69 per 1000 less for our taxpayers!

We are on the home-stretch of our bond projects! We are proud to say that our building projects are both on budget and on schedule to be ready for the first day of school, September 16th, 2019. With strikes and the weather causing a setback in construction, our crews have worked extremely hard to make up for the lost time. We want to thank everyone for their hard work on this project and each community member for your investment in our students and schools as we move towards the finish line.

Early Learning Center Dedication

A beautiful late winter evening set the scene for those gathered at Shelton’s Early Learning Center dedication on March 5.

After many months of remodeling the Shelton Early Learning Center located at 403 K Street, is open to students. The update which included the facility being stripped down to the studs and the interior rebuilt now welcomes nearly 160 students each day. With seven classroom spaces, a new playground, and a new heating and cooling system, the youngest learners enjoy reaching new heights in preparation for their K-12 education.

Visitors to the center were welcomed by Superintendent Alex Apostle, Jenny LaFrenier, Director of Special Services, the Shelton School Board of Directors and Gail Straus, former Director of Early Childhood Education and Federal Programs, and community tours were guided by center staff.

The Early Learning Center now combines classes from both the Evergreen and Mt View Campuses into one coordinated facility where students learn community and classroom skills to prepare them for Kindergarten and beyond.

If you would like more information on our Early Learning Center or how your child can qualify, contact the Special Services Department in the Shelton School District.

February 2019

The snow storms in February that cancelled school for four days also delayed work on our bond projects. Work at Mt. View, though delayed, will not imact the overall transition schedule. The delays were longer at Shelton High School due to the roof not being complete before the snow came. The primary contractor is determining the effects on the construction schedule. At this time the buildins are all scheduled to open ontime in September 2019.

Bond Construction progress at Mt View Elementary, the Early Learning Center, and Shelton High school

November 30, 2018

Exciting progress is being made with our bond projects. Our buildings are taking shape and moving along in preparation for a September 16, 2019 opening.
Shelton High School is progressing vertically. The enormity of the structure is becoming visible. The steel is moving into place on the wing nearest the Performing Arts Center. Preparations are being made for the second and third floor decking then pouring the concrete floors. The remaining concrete floors on the main level have now been poured and in the coming weeks we will see the steel structure taking shape for the remainder of the building.

The Early Learning Center will welcome students in January 2019. The District Early Learning Center is on schedule for completion and will be turned over for district use in December. Teachers will moving their classrooms into this Early Learning space over Winter Break in preparation to welcome students back in January.

Mt. View Elementary continues to grow. The main classroom wing at Mt. View Elementary is now dried in, meaning the roof has been weatherized and is now water tight. This allows crews to move indoors to begin work on mechanical systems, rough plumbing and electrical work. This work will progress in the coming weeks and once completed the interior can begin to be completed. The remaining structure continues to grow and take shape. Be sure to check out our aerial videos for a birds eye view of the structure.

Aerial videos of our campuses under construction, more videos will be coming to allow you to follow construction progress.
